In today’s world, how do we define “truth”? In an era of overwhelming information, how does artificial intelligence shape our perception of history, culture, and artistic craftsmanship? These questions are deeply explored in Ars Electronica 2023’s exhibition Who Owns the Truth?, and I’m honored that my work, “A.I. Grotto”, is part of this thought-provoking showcase at Campus Exhibit!

Ars Electronica: A Global Hub for Art and Technology

As one of the most prestigious festivals in digital art and technological innovation, Ars Electronica brings together leading artists, technologists, and researchers from around the world to explore the intersection of art, technology, and society. This year, under the theme Who Owns the Truth?, the exhibition questions how truth is constructed and manipulated in the digital age, especially in the era of AI and generative media.

Being featured in such a pioneering exhibition is not only a recognition of my artistic vision but also an opportunity to engage in a global conversation about AI, cultural heritage, and the future of craftsmanship.

A.I. Grotto: AI, Craftsmanship, and the Legacy of Ancient Art

A.I. Grotto examines the relationship between AI-generated art, craftsmanship, and ancient heritage sites, initiating a dialogue on how AI and traditional craftsmanship might coexist in the future. Drawing inspiration from the Dunhuang Cave Murals, which have a history spanning thousands of years, this project trains AI models to learn and transform contemporary news and photographs into the visual language of Dunhuang art, bridging ancient artistic traditions with modern narratives in a modernized documentation approach.

The Dunhuang Caves, located in Gansu Province, China, are among the most celebrated artistic and cultural sites in the world. With over 500 caves and 4,000+ murals spanning 1,600 years of history, these sites bear witness to the vibrant exchanges along the ancient Silk Road. Constructed between the 4th and 14th centuries AD, the murals and sculptures within the Mogao Caves represent a blend of Buddhist, Taoist, and secular art, reflecting the fusion of influences from China, India, Central Asia, and the West.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Mogao Caves remain an invaluable part of global cultural heritage. They continue to inspire artists and scholars worldwide, serving as a testament to the enduring power of art, storytelling, and human creativity.

By training AI to reimagine contemporary imagery in the style of Dunhuang murals, A.I. Grotto explores AI’s potential not only as a tool for creation but as a medium for historical reinterpretation, cultural preservation, and artistic evolution. It challenges the boundaries of AI-generated aesthetics, questioning whether AI can carry forward the spirit of craftsmanship that has defined traditional art for centuries.

The Fusion of AI and Cultural Heritage: My Creative Approach

As a new media artist, I am deeply interested in how technology, cultural heritage, and creative expression intersect. With A.I. Grotto, my goal is to investigate whether AI-generated art can uphold the spirit of craftsmanship and to reflect on how ancient artistic traditions can be preserved and reinterpreted in the digital age.

For this project, I utilized machine learning, generative AI, and 3D real-time rendering to create an interactive space where history and modernity merge. The work invites the audience to reflect on who shapes our narratives, who defines artistic authenticity, and how AI can contribute to preserving and evolving cultural traditions.
