Fashion in Katong
YEAR, LAUNCH
2020, Singapore
'Fashion in Katong' is a zine that intricately weaves together my memories and sensory experiences of this vibrant neighborhood in Singapore. Katong, once a seaside enclave dotted with villas and mansions, has evolved into a dynamic residential area within the Marine Parade planning zone. Land reclamation in the 1960s transformed its landscape, yet its rich cultural tapestry and architectural charm remain vibrant.
From the historic Katong Park to the bustling Joo Chiat area, Katong resonates with a rich mix of cultures that have shaped its unique identity. Its culinary scene is legendary, offering a mosaic of Peranakan delicacies and the iconic Katong laksa, a spicy noodle soup cherished by locals and visitors alike. The neighborhood's brightly colored shophouses along Joo Chiat Road, the heritage houses of Koon Seng Road, and the Eurasian Heritage Gallery stand as testaments to its cultural diversity and historical depth.
Through this zine, I invite viewers to explore this kaleidoscope of memories and flavors, celebrating the neighborhood's enduring spirit and its role in Singapore's cultural mosaic."
